DTP, Graphics and Adobe Acrobat files (PDF)
Additional products you can use if you want to specialise when you become a virtual assistant.
Desktop Publishing (DTP)
Desktop publishing is the 'next step' on from standard document production. You can produce DTP using Word but it is much easier to produce DTP using specialist products designed for graphics and text. Your client will need documents for their business and some examples are: • letterheads • flyers • business cards • invitations • menus • posters • promotional material • newsletters
Creation of Graphics and LogosIf you have graphics creation software and you are experienced in using it you can produce graphics and logos for documents and websites. If you have a product such as CorelDraw or PaintShop Pro, you will find lots of free tutorials on the web. Being able to produce graphics and edit them leads to some interesting extra work opportunities. One of my favourite jobs is taking Mac Word documents with graphics and converting them into PC Word documents. The changes are technical but it an enjoyable job and I have made this one of my 'niche' specialised skill. I have also expanded my graphic knowledge and now use 4 different packages which means I can work with more clients.
Adobe Acrobat
Most PCs have the Adobe Acrobat reader as part of the build or it can be downloaded from Adobe. With this you can read PDF documents. PDFs are not platform specific so can be read on PCs, MACs, UNIX and Linux machines to name just a few. You can read a document with output from a product you do not have such as Visio. Many e-books now come in PDF format.
Producing PDF documents for clients is another niche I have. The product is expensive but you can get other software that will produce simple PDF documents that work in the same way. It also allows you to send finished artwork to printers and other graphic designers and receive from these companies. If you have the full version of Acrobat you can extract the graphics from the PDF and work on it. If you live in the US or Canada you can use the product on-line paying for just the PDF's you need to make.
These are some of the ways you can sell this to a client:
- Do you want to produce documentation but protect your copyright?
- Do you want to produce downloadable web or e-files for distribution?
Adobe Acrobat® files are the answer. Quickly produced, able to be read via the Free Acrobat reader and printed on almost any platform they are protected from change and copying at the production stage.
We can quickly turn word processed, spreadsheet and presentation documents into media that you can safely distribute via e-mail, website or CD/DVD.
